Origins
The Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA) was founded in 1977 to unite and promote the emerging profession of art therapy in Canada.
On November 24, 1981, CATA became an incorporated non-profit organization with Industry Canada (formerly known as Consumer and Corporate Affairs Canada).
Vision
A world where everyone can heal and flourish through connection and creativity.
Mission
CATA stewards the profession of art therapy in Canada while cultivating an inclusive Canadian art therapy community through establishing standards, offering career development to members, advocating for and supporting the profession.

What We Do
CATA-ACAT works in cooperation with provincial art therapy associations to raise professional standards in the interest of public safety and trust. This includes upholding ethical standards; setting standards and processes for professional and registered designations for art therapists; working with art therapy training programs to ensure that they meet CATA’s educational standards; publishing a tri-annual online magazine and bi-annual academic journal, support and encouraging research about art therapy and raising awareness about of art therapy in Canada.

Meet the CATA Board of Directors
The Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA-ACAT) is supported by a passionate and creative Board of Directors who work together to nurture and grow our art therapy community across Canada. Each board member brings unique experience, vision, and heart to their role—advocating for the healing potential of art and supporting art therapists in their professional and personal journeys.
As a volunteer working board, our directors are actively involved in all aspects of the CATA-ACAT's operations—from communications and membership engagement to advocacy, education, and event planning. Through collaboration and care, the board ensures that CATA-ACAT continues to thrive as a supportive, inclusive, and professional community for art therapists nationwide.

Heidi Argyle
PRESIDENT

Pronouns: She/herHeidi is a radiant creator, playful by nature, intelligent to a fault who believes in providing sanctuary to those who need it and is a powerful leader. She is an Art Therapist by trade, and has been working as a Registered Psychotherapist in Ontario for about 10 years. Heidi is also a Kink Knowledgeable Therapist, Sex Therapist and believes art can be the bridge to good stuff we didn't know we needed.

Tammy Reynolds is an art therapist and registered psychotherapist practicing in Thunder Bay, Ontario. -

Katrina Grabner
EDUCATION

Pronouns: She/herKatrina Grabner is a Registered Canadian Art Therapist (RCAT), Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC-BCACC), a professional member of the the Quebec Art Therapy Association (ATPQ), educator, artist, and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP). Her practice integrates nervous system–aware, trauma-informed approaches with art therapy. She is full time faculty at Concordia University in the Creative Arts Therapies and is a graduate of St. Stephens College's master’s program in psychotherapy and spirituality with an art therapy specialization.

Rakshanda Khan

Pronouns: She/herRakshanda Khan is a South Asian settler, Registered Art Therapist and Registered Psychotherapist who is passionate about graphic medicine, digital and online creative processes as well as traditional arts practices in therapy. She strives to practice from a reflexive, client-centered, trauma-informed, strengths-based, neurodiversity affirming, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive framework.

Anand Jaggernauth

Pronouns: He/himAnand is a therapist, artist, teacher and advocate for the integration of creativity in our healing journey. He is a member of the CATA board as the Treasurer Chair. Anand is a graduate of the Toronto Art Therapy Institute and also holds a BSc in Geophysics from the University Of Western Ontario. He works in private practice in Toronto and is registered both with the Canadian Art Therapy Association and the College Of Registered Psychotherapists Of Ontario. Originally from the Caribbean, Anand enjoys yoga, travelling and spending time in his art studio.

Natalie T. Smith

Nathalie has an extensive academic background in art psychotherapy, sand therapy, international development, theology, administration and education. She has worked several years as a gender equality and social inclusion expert in numerous countries across America, Asia, and Africa.In her private practice as an art psychotherapist she employs an inclusive and integrative approach where she primarily works with neuro-divergent populations.

Rehaana Manek

Rehaana has 2+ years working with children and youth and providing therapy in the education system. They have done research on the BIPOC student art therapy experience in education settings and how that reflects care work with our clients, exploring their experiences with racism, institutionalised oppression, white supremacy and working through these experiences to become better art therapists, and create a more caring world. -

Simon is an art therapy student at KATI, whose work is grounded in creativity, connection, and community care. As a mixed-race, queer artist, Simon collaborates with curiosity and empathy. He is passionate about creating inclusive environments where everyone can feel seen, heard, and valued. Simon enjoys singing, swimming in the ocean, and taking rest. With a background in architecture and design, he loves bringing ideas to life through visual storytelling and creative communication. -

Sonya Procter

Thank you for this honour of becoming a Board member for CATA of Governance! I am completing my master's in counselling psychology at Yorkville University and I am in my first year of art therapy at KATI. During my second year at Yorkville, art therapy came onto my radar, and after completing one trimester of my practicum at Yorkville, I realized that art therapy is an area I want to focus on. I spent much of 2024 on my master’s studies and also became a play therapy practitioner. -

Amanda Gee

Amanda is a Registered Canadian Art Therapist and Registered Counseling Therapist living and working in Nova Scotia. Amanda graduated from the TATI in 2006 and has been practicing, publishing and presenting ever since. She has been involved in CATA in various roles for many years including helping review RCAT applications, and holding multiple roles on the board of directors.

Shirley Wang

Pronouns: She/theyShirley is a multidiscplinary artist and art therapy student currently completing her major research project with the Toronto Art Therapy Institute.
Shirley enjoys making ceramic wares and jewellery for grounding and meditation. She also has extensive years of experience working as an operations administrator in the education and healthcare sectors.
Shirley is a strong advocate for CATA-ACAT's mission and values, and is elated to serve and support the community she found belonging in through this administrative role.

Haley Toll

Haley Toll, Ph.D. RP (Ontario), CCC, RCAT, has worked with children and adults internationally and across Canada in trauma-care related to relocation, cancer diagnosis, HIV diagnosis, sexual abuse, and other psychological and emotional challenges for over twelve years. She trained practitioners and students in Botswana, Thailand, Edmonton, St. John’s, and Mongolia in art therapy, arts-informed counselling, and crisis intervention practices. She is the Lead Editor of the CJAT and CATA’s past president (2016-2019). -

Samuel Stevenson has worked with CATA-ACAT for more than eight years as a digital tinkerer who finds fulfillment in creating conditions that support clarity, emergence, and flow. Trained as an art therapist, he approaches technology and communication as creative processes rooted in reflection, relationship, and attunement to evolving needs. -

Amy Tschupruk

Pronouns: She/herAmy is an art therapist in Tkaronto (Toronto). Her experience includes supporting clients in long term care, hospital, public school and private practice. Prior to pursuing art therapy, Amy worked at several digital agencies doing web development, design, and animation. She also works as a Teaching Assistant at Toronto Art Therapy Institute.

Sarah Gysin

Sarah is an art therapist, psychotherapist, and artist currently practicing in Ottawa, ON. She received her MA in Creative Arts Therapies at Concordia University in Montreal, where she also received a BA in Psychology and Art Education. She is passionate about artistic expression within her own practice and with clients, and has an interest for exploring narratives and storytelling through comics. When she's not working or illustrating, you can find Sarah buried in a book or crocheting hats for her cats.
